House Extension
Mar. - May 2003,
Sharon Springs, New York
This classic,
19th century, brick house needed a contemporary extension to allow my
client to circulate throughout the building in his wheelchair. The main
element of the new structure is a ramp connecting the two floors.
The ground level
has a new open kitchen and living room while the upper floor contains
two additional guest bedrooms and bathrooms. Half way up, at the turning
point of the ramped corridor a reflection room invites one to pause. A
grand window offers views of the large property and the surrounding Catskill
Mountains. The glass of this window is perpendicular to the bisecting
line of the ramp. At night the glass faintly reflects interior light and
serves as a mirror to see the full length of the ramped corridor from
each end, much like Bruce Nauman’s Double Wedge Corridor with Mirror
from 1970.
