For this Bench/Coffee Table, each of the two bases is made out of an eighteen foot long carbon steel rod that is a half inch in diameter. The rod is bent twelve times at a sixty degree angle. To attain its dark flat finish, the base has been dipped into a bath of phosphoric acid.
For the top, a found material β a curved American walnut tree grown in Woodstock, New York β was cut into eight slabs. After being dried in a sun-heated kiln, the two surfaces of the slabs were sanded, and then the entire plank was oiled. By coincidence, each live edge slab curves 45Β°, so when all benches are placed together, they form a full circle.
